Untuk Rena

Film Review – Untuk Rena

Written by T Pratama

“Untuk Rena" is a poignant tale of an eleven year old girl named Rena who lives in an orphanage with many other young children.  The orphanage is called “Rumah Matahari” and all the children love it there, and dread the idea of being adopted and taken away to another home.  The children are funny and very close to each other, and in many ways Rena acts like an older sister to all the other children.

This happy idyll is one day suddenly complicated by the arrival of a man called Mr.Yudha. He comes to the orphanage because he knows Rena is his daughter.  Rena grew up believing that her family died in a tragic car accident but the truth was that her father, Mr. Yudha actually survived.  He spends many weeks with the children and becomes very close to Rena, without her knowing he is her real father.  Although the children are uncomfortable with Mr. Yudha at first, because they believe he is there to take one of them away, they come to like him and then he takes them to a carnival and the market.

Eventually, Mrs.Tia, the lady in charge of the orphanage, reveals to Rena that Mr. Yudha is her real father and that she and her father were the only people to survive the car accident.  Rena is devastated to hear this news because she feels as though her father had abandoned her until now.  Rena at first rejected her father’s offer to take her home with him but after she realizes how much he needs her and vice-versa, she decides to go and live with him.

All the children miss Rena as she is the oldest child in the orphanage and acts as their older sister.  They all look to her for love and care.  In the end, however, they are all happy for her to go and live with her real father.

This film, which has English subtitles and contains lots of passion.  It contains stories of human faith and endeavors, a heart-warming tale that runs the gamut of human emotion. It also effectively captures everyday life in the society.

The children and the music sound track enhance the story.  Each child plays their role naturally.  The film also shows many beautiful scenes of Indonesia.  The whole film is very enjoyable, invigorating and heart felt and certainly very educational for everyone.
