Garuda Di Dadaku

             Film Review

        “Garuda Di Dadaku”

         Written by T Pratama

The film “Garuda Di Dadaku” is the story of a young boy named Bayu, who dreams of becoming a national soccer player.  He practices every day in the streets of his neighbourhood.  Bayu lives with his grandfather, Usman and his mother, Wahyuni.  Bayu’s father has passed away, he was a soccer player but did not make it to a professional level.  This meant that the family lived in poverty.  Therefore, Usman does not support Bayu’s aspirations of becoming a soccer player.  He believes that there is no successful future for him as a soccer player and that it is not a respectable living.  Bayu must hide his love for the game but is determined to pursue his dream.

On Bayu’s twelfth birthday, his best friend Heri, helps Bayu to celebrate his birthday by taking him to the All-Indonesian soccer tournament where they watch Jakarta play East Java.  At the end of the match, Bayu kicks a ball around in the car park.  A soccer coach from Arsenal Indonesia team notices Bayu’s skills and suggests he could have a chance at joining the Arsenal national team.

Heri believes Bayu is destined to be a soccer player so he shows him a flyer about the Indonesian Football Association holding try-outs for under thirteens to make the national team.  Heri encourages Bayu to join and provides him with financial support so he can practice with Arsenal Soccer School.  Heri helps Bayu to train and hide his activities from his grandfather.  With support from Heri, a mysterious friend Zahra and Bayu’s mother, Bayu passes the try-outs and plays for the national team.  Bayu fulfils is dream of becoming a great soccer player for Indonesia.

“Garuda Di Dadaku” is suitable for children and young adults, which has English subtitles and is light-hearted, patriotic and humorous at times.  It sends a message of hope and determination to encourage people to chase their dreams.
